May 10, 2011:      I Writ Gud Revews

I got a lot of feedback from my April 1st debut performance at Carnegie Hall.    Apparently, some folks tried to buy tickets at the last minute but it was sold out.    I feel terrible about this, however I have good news.   My impresario has booked a follow up concert for next April 1st.  Tickets will go on sale shortly.

I can report that the reviews were excellent.   Here’s a quote from a Mr. B. Susswein that is also available at http://www.u-give-me-20-bucks-I-write-gud-review.com:

[Heilner’s] interpretation of the chopin mazurkas was quite extraordinary, and the grieg piano concerto…words cannot convey the subtlety of his reading. and james levine and the ny philharmonic as usual did a creditable job accompanying him. and that after party was pretty wild.  i will spare you all the details, and refrain from namedropping, but if you missed it, well, you missed it.

Meanwhile, May is a pretty quite month for me music wise.  I’m glad, since this gives me the perfect opportunity to catch up on weeding the front lawn.   Death to dandelions….

===========================
May 14, Saturday, 7-10:00 PM – Eric Heilner plus 2/5 of Ben & The Franklins,  Raffle/Fund Raiser for Playhouse, Van Vleck Estate, 21 Van Vleck St., Montclair, NJ 07042 (973) 744-4752
Many moons ago my kids went to Playhouse Nursery School.  In one of those coincidences of life, my wife Lisa is now a director at said same school.   This is their annual fund raiser.  There will be raffles, silent auctions for various goodies, food, and entertainment.  For those of you who have never been there, the Van Vleck Estate is worth the trip all on it’s own.   I will be playing piano from roughly 7 to 9, and then at roughly 9-ish I will be joined by Ben Susswein and Adam Gustavson for another 30-45 minutes of swing, blues, and (if you ask politely) Ben’s originals.

May 20, Friday, 7:00-9:30ish PM – Eric Heilner at Ruthie’s Bar-B-Q & Pizza, 64 1/2 Chestnut Ave, Montclair  (973) 509-1134
If you’ve never been over to Ruthie’s, seize the moment and drop in.   I’ve added a few new boogie woogie numbers to my repertoire, and you never know who will show up to sit in.

April 1, 2011:      The Spaghetti Tree

I know that at least a few of you are old enough to remember the Jack Paar Show – and some of those few will even admit it.   One of the more memorable bits on this show was the famous Spaghetti Tree ‘documentary’ which was originally broadcast on BBC.   This 2 and 1/2 minute black & white film documented an unusually good harvest from the spaghetti trees in Southern Switzerland.   Even to my pre-adolescent eyes somehow this did not seem quite right, but many people believed it.

Many people feel that this is one of the all time best April Fool jokes ever perpetrated.   See for yourself (quality is a little poor):

Meanwhile, here’s where you can see me this cruelest of months:

April 1, Friday, 8-10:00 PM – Eric Heilner,  Carnegie Hall, 881 7th Ave, New York, NJ 10019 (212) 999-9999
I am pleased to make my debut performance at this well known musical theater.  For my opening numbers I will be doing the Chopin Sonata #42 in E minor and several Mazurkas. Following intermission I will be doing Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the full New York Metropolitan Symphony under the able baton of James Levine.  Ticket prices are $100, $80, $60.

April 4, Monday, 9PM-late – Big Ed Sullivan’s World Famous Blues Jam,  The Grisley Pear, 107 MacDougal St, New York, NY 10012 (212) 529-3808
I rarely get out on a Monday Night, being a working bloke and all that.   But this Monday my shackles will be unlocked and I will be let loose on the town. There is no cover charge or minimum at The Grisley Pear, but I am told that it is strict club policy that you must have a good time or they won’t let you stay.

March 5, 2011:      Obsolete

Shortly I will be obsolete.

Unless you’ve been in complete isolation for the last 20 years (in which case you would not be receiving this e-mail in the first place) you are aware that computers are taking over everything.  They can beat the best chess player in the world, they can beat the best Jeopardy players in the world, according to today’s NY Times they are replacing lawyers (insert your favorite lawyer joke here) and, yes, they are taking over both the playing and composing of music.

Case in point, if you want some laughs, go here (thanks Hannah!):

http://www.thebluesmaker.com/

Now, you too can compose your own blues song in just three minutes. Yeah, I know it’s a goof site, but there are more serious things going on.   If you’re curious, just do a search web on “Computer composed Music”.   Time is running out for us mere mortals.

So…. If you can want to see me play before I become totally obsolete, better act fast.  There’s no telling when

March 6, Sunday, 3-6 PM – Blues Jam Afternoon,  Hat City, 459 Valley St, Orange, NJ 07050 (862) 252-9147
Al Gold has been running this great blues jam for the last few months and it’s been taking off.  The room is clean and open, the food is great, the music has been outstanding, and it’s on a Sunday afternoon – so all us all old farts who have to get to work the next day don’t have to worry about losing sleep.  No cover.

March 19, Saturday, 8:00PM-2:00AM – Nikki Armstrong & Whole Lotta Blues, B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, 237 West 42 St (212) 997-4144
It’s a Saturday Night in New York City and I will be joining forces with the incomparible Nikki Armstrong and an amazing group of musicians to make superb music.  Note that there are two rooms at BB King’s, we will be playing in Lucille’s Lounge, which is off to the left as you go down the staircase.   (I think Vanilla Fudge – The Farewell Tour is playing in the other room.)  There is no cover charge but there may be some minimum to sit at a table.  The food is excellent but just a little on the pricey side (this is in Time Square after all); however you can also hang out at the bar and stay for the price of a beer or soda.

February 3, 2011:      That White Stuff Coming From the Sky

The Snow Storm
Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,
Arrives the snow, and, driving o’er the fields,
Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air
Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,
And veils the farm-house at the garden’s end.
The sled and traveller stopped, the courier’s feet
Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit
Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed
In a tumultuous privacy of storm.

Or so says Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Here’s my take:

The Snow Storm
Announced by all the forecasters of the stations,
Arrives yet another danged snowstorm, and, driving o’er the lawns,
Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air (visibility 1/4 mile)
Hides malls and marts, the storm drain, and the airport,
And veils the gas station at Valley Road’s end.
The Decamp bus and commuters stopped, the FedEx guy
Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit
Around the radiant wide screen TV,
As I work from home.

January 8, 2011:      My First Overseas Performance

Those of you who happened to be in Italy the last week of December may have caught my impromptu perormance at the Pantheon Inn in Rome on Dec 29th:

In case you’re doubting the authenticity of this picture, notice the bust on top of the piano.   I got excellent reviews from the clerk at the front desk.

The remainder of you will have to settle for seeing me back in the USA.

November 13, 2010:      What Makes Us Tick

Those busy beavers, the scientists, are at it again – doing those danged experiments to figure out what makes us folks tick.   Here is an actual experiment that made the news recently:

Subjects are asked to memorize lists of numbers.  One group is asked to memorize a two digit number, while the other is asked to memorize a seven digit number.  They are then instructed to go down a hallway to another room.  On their way down the hallway, they are offered a snack to thank them for their participation.  The snack?  They can either have a luscious piece of moist chocolate cake or some healthy fruit.   And here’s where things get interesting.   The folks who had to memorize the seven digit number?  They are twice as likely to choose the cake as the folks who only had to memorize the two digit number.   This result is consistent across age and gender.

The conclusion is that when the rational part of our mind is hard at work it gets overloaded (ummm, gotta remember … 7624902, 7624902, 7624902, what was that?) and then our emotional brain takes over (yummmm, chocolate cake much tastier than healthy fruit).

You can get some very funny commentary here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122781981.

Or, if you want to spend $14, you can get a re-print of the original paper here:  http://www.jstor.org/pss/2489734   “Heart and Mind in Conflict: The Interplay of Affect and Cognition in Consumer Decision Making” – now say that three times real fast.

You may use either your rational mind and/or your emotional mind to enjoy these performances….

Nov 24, Wednesday, 8-12 PM – Kevin Kiley Blues Jam,  Franklin Tavern, 97-99 Franklin Ave. West Orange, NJ   862-224-4063
The Franklin Tavern makes the mainstream media.   There’s a great article in this week’s issue (Nov 15) of The New Yorker magzine about Bettye LaVette – and near the end of the article the writer describes a typical Wednesday night at the Franklin.  If you’re at all familiar with The New Yorker, you know that the quality of writing is high caliber and this article is no exception.  You will actually have to spend money to read the full article, but it will be money well spent.  Nov 24th is the night before Thanksgiving, so you can stay out a little later than usual and catch some blues.   There’s no cover charge, but it’s a good thing to buy a drink or soda and tip the bartender.

It’s getting cold outside so Ruthie’s is going indoors for music.   I’ll be doing a mix of New Orleans, boogie woogie, and a dash of good old rock & roll.  BYOB.
